Eligibility and General Rules

The competition is open to anyone attending Beantown Camp 2009. There is no limit to the number of divisions an individual may enter except for only one of the Jack & Jill categories. There are no age restrictions. The competitors meeting must be attended by all individual division competitors and by at least one of the competitors in the couple division.

Judging Information

Scoring will be based on relative placement. Rule violations may result in penalties. All judges' decisions are final and protests are not allowed. Restarts will only be permitted in the case of music system failure or major costume or shoe catastrophe (such as broken heel or strap). Contestants must request a restart at the time the problem occurs, not after leaving the floor. Restarts require the approval of the Chief Judge. Awards will be given to the top three placements in each category. Monetary awards will be based on the number of participants.

Competition Categories

Strictly Lindy

The focus in this category is social dancing with an emphasis on partnering, teamwork and musicality. Judges are generally looking to how couples react to each other and to the music rather than choreography, within the context of Lindy Hop as determined by the judges. Couples may be required to dance in heats, both individually and at the same time as other couples, to a variety of tempos. Music is selected by NELHC. It is appropriate for couples to wear coordinating attire if they desire. A minimum of 3 couples is required in order to hold this division.

Solo Charleston

This category is a non-partner division. Competitors may be required to dance in heats, both individually and at the same time as other competitors, to a variety of tempos. Music is selected by NELHC. A minimum of 3 competitors is required in order to hold this division.

Novice Jack & Jill

Contestants sign up individually. This division is for those who place themselves as beginner to beginner-intermediate dancers and competitors. If you have never competed before but are a higher level dancer, then either the Intermediate or Advanced Jack & Jill is the appropriate division for you. In the preliminary, contestants will be paired randomly with several partners and will dance to a variety of tempos. Contestants will be selected individually for the finals. In the finals, couples will be paired randomly and judged as a couple. Finalists will dance in heats to a variety of tempos. Music is selected by NELHC. Individuals entered in Novice may not also compete in Intermediate or Advanced Jack & Jill.

Intermediate Jack & Jill

Contestants sign up individually. This division is for those who place themselves as intermediate dancers and competitors. In the preliminary, contestants will be paired randomly with several partners and will dance to a variety of tempos. Contestants will be selected individually for the finals. In the finals, couples will be paired randomly and judged as a couple. Finalists may be required to dance individually and/or in heats to a variety of tempos. Music is selected by NELHC. Individuals entered in Intermediate may not also compete in Novice or Advanced Jack & Jill.

Advanced Jack & Jill

Contestants sign up individually. This division is for those who place themselves as advanced dancers and competitors. It is also for any Beantown Camp instructors who wish to compete. This division will be run the same as the Intermediate Jack & Jill. Individuals entered in Advanced may not also compete in Novice or Intermediate Jack & Jill.

Competition Registration

You must be registered for Beantown Camp 2009 to be eligible to compete. You may register for NELHC at the same time as registering for the camp. You can also add entries by submitting an additional registration with just the competitions selected. Everyone will be required to sign a Waiver at check-in. To be registered, a completed registration form and payment from both members of a couple and each individual competitor must have been received.
