Sugar Sullivan started her career at the age of nine. She was a member of the Original Jazz Dancers, a distinguished group of Lindy Hoppers and Hoofers from Harlem’s heyday. Sugar has been featured with the Harlem Blues and Jazz Band, Cab Calloway’s Hi-De-Ho Orchestra, and Panama Francis and his Savoy Sultans, among others.
Sugar learned to dance at home, starting Tap dancing at age four. She was instructed in Tap by Buster Brown when he was performing with the Three Speed Kings.
Sugar now lives in Miami, Florida.
Sugar Sullivan and Barbara Billups met at the Savoy Ballroom in the early fifties. They have performed across the USA, as well as Canada with Sonny Allen and the Rockets. They’ve taught in Houston, Texas, Seattle, Washington, and Herrang Dance Camp in Sweden. Sugar and Barbara are both in the International Lindy Hop Hall of Fame.
We’re thrilled to have Sugar and Barbara back to Beantown this year as our special guests! Be sure to take this opportunity to meet these two amazing ladies. You do not want to miss their Q&A!
