David Butts was coached by the famous Mama Lu Parks in the 1950s. Her group carried on the Lindy Hop from the 1950s to the 1990s. Mama Lu Parks worked with Harlem youth with the goal of keeping the legacy of Lindy Hop alive for future generations. As a leader of her Parkettes dance troupe he performed worldwide. David Butts served as a cultural ambassador of the dance around the world traveling to England, Africa, and Mexico. He also participated in the 1968 Olympics in Mexico. David competed in his first Harvest Moon Ball in which he won second place with his partner Debra Youngblood whom he partnered with for over 15 years. Not long after David Butts and his partner Betty Silva won the 1962 Harvest Moon Ball with their high energy dancing and movements. David Butts performed and instructed for many decades. David learned Lindy Hop from the original Lindy Hoppers who danced at the Savoy Ballroom. He was under the tutelage of the legendary George Sullivan who was also Sugar Sullivan’s partner. David Butts, now living in South Carolina, still teaches and demonstrates his favorite Lindy Hop and Jazz dance moves within the global Lindy Hop community.
